Otȟókahe - The Beginning
The Sitting Bull College Immersion Nest - Lakȟól’iyapi Wahóȟpi - began in September 2012 with a group of eleven 3-year olds, and has been thriving since. The program incorporates strategies from successful language revitalization models around the world (Hawai'i, Maori) and is pulls from several Early Childhood Education (ECE) best practices to teach the children in total immersion - only in Lakota for the duration of the school day. Our first year was originally funded through an Administration for Native Americans grant, and continues to be supported by the ANA to this day.
